The kit is very simple, anyone with some common sense can put these kits together! It is a few months now since I put mine together and I have to say I’m very happy with the mono-blocks. Initially I had a slight hum problem because I was running the pre-amp section of my integrated valve amp, using unbalanced adaptor cables. The Nilai’s still sounded excellent and didn’t take too long to “run in”. I then managed to get a valve pre-amp with balanced outputs; hum problem solved but the pre-amp now had to be run in. The combination now sounds pretty stunning I think. Plenty of power on tap, black backgrounds and sweet (But not sugary!)highs, clean and well defined low end. Midrange is detailed, acurate (Timbre) and agile. Brass sounds like brass and strings – cello, violin and guitar – are pure and realistic (If the recording is up to it!). These kits are not cheap, but I think they still represent a clear bargain. The rest of the system is; Auralic Aries G1, Oppo udp 205 (Mainly used as a DAC, but also for disc spinning.) Pro-Ject Pre-amp RS (New old stock), Hypex Nilai 500’s and Audiophysic Spark III speakers. All power is routed through a Puritan psm156 (DC blocker). Thoroughly recommended. KJF audio was spot on for service and a pleasure to deal with!

I’ve had my Nilai monos for just over a year now so I thought perhaps time to give some feedback. First, the buying experience. If you feel nervous about dealing with a small business like KJF, don’t be. Stefan was a pleasure to deal with (and he has a dry sense of humour!). He very readily got back to Hypex on a small post-sale issue, which was in fact caused by my home crafted power lead. Now, making the kits. It really was easy. Just take it steady, follow the visual instructions and you get there. No soldering required. It helps to slacken off the casing screws slightly when sliding the lid panel into place, but that’s all I can really add here. The casework is a series of panels which fit precisely – very precisely! – together. Serviceable rather than beautiful, the finished unit has a distinct sense of solidity. How does they sound? I would use terms like ‘quick’, ‘detailed’, ‘open’, ‘non-fatiguing’. But I’m not sure how much that helps anyone else. The fact is I don’t really notice them now. I just listen to the music. So if these Hypex Nilai500s have a ‘sound’, I really, really like it. Any criticisms? The standby button is tiny, invisible on the casework and I have to locate it by feel. A circular, edge illuminated switch like my RME DAC would have been preferable. That’s it. Otherwise, these are really great pieces of kit.
