Description
The new Markaudio Alpair 5G is a breakthrough 50 mm full‑range driver featuring the world’s first UTAG ultra‑thin glass diaphragm. The 5G introduces a material technology that fundamentally changes cone behaviour. Developed by GAIT using Dinorex UTG® glass, this diaphragm offers faster sound‑wave propagation than metal or paper, significantly improving transient response, micro‑detail retrieval, and upper‑band smoothness, outperforming traditional metal and paper designs. With a near‑flat response from resonance to 10 kHz and a clean rise extending to 40 kHz, the Alpair 5G offers a level of resolution rarely found in wide‑band drivers.
Compared with the previous Alpair 5.3, the 5G introduces a dramatic leap in performance. The new glass cone provides faster sound propagation, reduced internal resonance, and a smoother, more refined top end. A precision butyl suspension, low‑distortion ferrite motor with pure copper coil, and rigid die‑cast aluminium basket complete the design, ensuring stability and accuracy even under demanding conditions.
Ideal for high‑resolution desktop systems, compact monitors, FAST/WAW builds, and premium DIY loudspeakers, the Alpair 5G sets a new benchmark for small full‑range performance. Its combination of cutting‑edge materials and meticulous engineering makes it the most advanced evolution of the Alpair 5 series to date.
Advanced UTAG Glass Cone Technology
The ultra‑thin glass cone provides:
- High internal loss, reducing internal resonance and reverberation
- Shorter decay times than aluminium or titanium
- Superior environmental stability, resisting humidity, temperature shifts, and long‑term ageing
- Lightweight construction, enabling rapid acceleration and clean transient behaviour
These characteristics give the Alpair 5G a uniquely transparent and refined sonic signature, free from the metallic overtones sometimes associated with alloy cones.
Wide Frequency Range and High‑Resolution Output
The Alpair 5G maintains a near‑flat response from resonance to 10 kHz, followed by a controlled rise extending to 40 kHz, providing exceptional air, sparkle, and spatial detail. This makes it ideal for:
- High‑resolution desktop audio
- Compact studio monitors
- FAST/WAW systems
- Premium DIY full‑range loudspeakers
Its very low‑profile multiform cone geometry ensures broad directivity, maintaining consistent off‑axis performance in small enclosures.
Low‑Distortion Motor and Suspension System
Markaudio pairs the glass diaphragm with a precision‑engineered mechanical system:
- Double ferrite magnet for stable magnetic flux
- Pure copper voice coil for reduced distortion
- Mixed‑grade butyl suspension balancing low mass with high stability
- Die‑cast aluminium basket to minimise frame‑borne vibration
These components work together to deliver a clean midrange, articulate bass for its size, and excellent dynamic behaviour.

Markaudio Alpair 5G Cabinet plans
As usual Scott Lindgren has produced loads of plans for Markaudio using this driver. This driver is physically a little different to the Alpair 5.3 before it. It is 0.4mm smaller across it’s diameter and the frame is 5mm where the former was 6mm. It will physically fit into holes you cut for the previous driver with a shim (or extra thick gasket). Beware tough the motor system is quite a bit deeper so if you have little clearance at the back of your cabinet, take care that if fits first. Acoustically it will work in most applications you previously had the 5.3.
Of course these drivers will also work in Frugel-horn Lite kits and the SL5-SD kits
