Hex socket (cap head) self tapping screws

These metric, high tensile steel, black, self tapping screws are fully threaded with a hex/allen head.

These are the same screw that are supplied with all Markaudio drivers. They are brilliant screws and look much better than using a cross head self tapper. I prefer the use of these for tweeters, and midbass drivers than bolts. With a bolt you always have to use some sort of threaded insert like a t-nut or the e-type inserts I sell for larger bolts. Both of these solutions work really well for heavier drivers or drivers with a large flange as they spread the load very well, however they do take up a lot of room and it is often impossible to get them in. I searched high and low to try and find somewhere to get these screws and eventually commissioned them to be made for KJF Audio from the same factory Mark Audio use.

To use them you must first drill a pilot hole of 2.5 or 3.5mm depending on which screw size you use. Without the driver in place, screw the screw right into the pilot hole, making sure that you keep the screw perpendicular at all times. Once you have cut the initial thread be careful to replace the the screw each time you use it so that it goes back into the same thread you cut initially, make sure you don’t cut a new thread each time other wise you will eventually ruin the hole.

It is extremely important when you tighten a driver into your speakers rebate that you do not over tighten the screw, you are not trying to make the driver part of the cabinet, all you are trying to do is create a seal between the back of the driver and the rebate. The screw just needs to be nipped up. Over tightening will distort the frame of your driver and in extreme cases will make the coil rub in the gap.
